Dear reader,

As Chairman of the Board of the European Capital Markets Institute, it is a pleasure to present to you the annual report of ECMI for 2010. At a time when regulators and supervisors are facing the intense workload of re-regulating financial markets, ECMI has managed to inform many of the debates that are central to this re-regulation. The Institute has once more exceeded our expectations.

Quality and independence of research are the two core values that we strive to ensure from the Board of ECMI. Stakeholders of all kinds, from EU institutions to investment banks, recognise these values in ECMI, which has become a highly reputable and trusted institution. And, while figures may not be the best indicator of quality in research, it is worth noting that ECMI has increased the distribution of its output by more than 50% in comparison to 2009.

Proof of the trust that is placed in ECMI is also found in the experts who participated in its task forces, round tables and conferences. This year has seen the active participation of many personalities, such as Mme. Christine Lagarde, French Minister for the Economy; Fabrice Demarigny, Head of Capital Markets Activities at Mazars Group; Ugo Bassi, Head of Unit for Asset Management at the European Commission; Larry Harris, former Chief Economist at the Securities and Exchange Commission; Ignace Combes, Deputy CEO at Euroclear; Arlene McCarthy, Vice-Chair MEP of the ECON Committee; Xavier Rolet, CEO at LSE Group; or David Wright, Deputy Director General at DG Internal Market.

These are just some of the achievements outlined in this annual report, which I am honoured to present to you and for which I thank all our members and contributors, as well as our secretariat team led by Karel Lannoo.
